Well here goes …

Image

It all started 44 years ago as a child. My hugely talented Mum taught me to sew. First creation was a pencil case and graduated on to clothes for my Sindy doll. By the time the 1980’s hit i was a groovy, shiny thing with very firm ideas of how my fashion sense was forming and none of the UK high street shops quite gave the twist I was looking for so I returned to my Mum’s machine. The really fun stuff started here. Pencil skirts and jackets with yes the obligatory shoulder pads but the difference being, mine had the funkiest linings EVER!

Cupids arrow got me good and proper in 1984, by 1989 a wedding on the cards. Mum and I made my dress. We used a Vogue pattern but changed all the bits we didn’t like and so I walked down the aisle thinking I looked the bees knees! Every stitch was put in with love. Now my darling Mum is no longer with me I can look at the dress we made together and I have a physical as well as mental memory of that precious time. She taught me in the old school style which was complimented by the utterly fantabulous Ms McGarry my needlecraft teacher at secondary school. To this day i can hear them in my head when I’m tempted to cut corners for speed. Yes sometimes I ignore them but rarely.

Once bitten by this sewing bug, be prepared to turn your creative life over to it!!!
