2 in 1 day …..

Well here I am again doing my creative therapy.

image

I’m not given to bad moods and/ or temper tantrums apart from when it’s hot, wet, cold, windy, daylight, nighttime, breathing etc ! I jest a ickle bit, I am a pretty even tempered sort

BUT today proved too much for even me the Ghandi of Bedfordshire. I will learn to stick to tried and tested methods when sewing. I was taught by 2 awesomely talented women, my beautiful late Mum and the very elegant Miss McGarry my needlework teacher at senior school. They taught me the ‘proper’ way. You know, the way that makes it a craft, a piece of art.

I let the technology of my over locker seduce me into cutting corners on the making of my gypsy skirt with its fan-dangled gathering foot. At first glance it was pretty clever and lightening quick. Head down like a seasoned Formula 1 driver, I revved the machine and threw myself headlong into the make.

Let me tell you, hung ho and horribly fool hardy, the finished garment is so far from the standard I would expect from myself. ย The skirt photographs ok and will be perfectly functional for work but on close inspection the gathering is uneven and not full enough for my liking.

Enter Oscar award winning tantrum as I threw my toys out of the pram in a most spectacular fashion. Good job HH has been with me for 32 years, he knew exactly what noises to make, faces to pull and then soothe me back to a near state of sanity. ย Tear stained, sweating and sweaty mary female was not a good look. Lesson learned. Stick to the true, time consuming and beautiful craft. No more short cuts for me. Back to the 2 rows of loose stitching lovingly and carefully gathered to perfection, pinned and sewn into place.

Attempt 2 tomorrow for DD1 minus tantrums, hiss fits, diva fits or whatever you prefer to call them. Yes it will take at least twice as long but for me, that’s where the love and satisfaction lay, producing something to be proud of rather than the constant reminder of being a lazy old corner cutter ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Now to sink into a gorgeous bubble bath, listen to some music and turn the mare into a dim memory. ย Ohmmmmmmm ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ

A Great Starter …

Just have to become a great finisher!

I find when my anxieties start to get the better of me I bury myself in some kind of crafty, creative project. It’s a pretty good therapy, well for me it is ๐Ÿ˜‰

My my rainbow makers as I like to call them were my project last Sunday. I have more Swarovski crystals than any one human should have and it felt like a good time to use some of the stash along with some mini semi precious stones. A few crimp beads and jewellery wire….. hey presto a little collection to hand at a window that gets direct sunlight. ย As if by magic lots of rainbows appear on my walls, floor and ceiling. Simple but very effective.

Theres another baby in my friendship group so another blanket has been started, got until December to finish it ๐Ÿ˜‚

The fabric. Well as if I don’t have enough stashed I found some lovely cotton viscose on eBay for ยฃ3 per meter. My recent gypsy skirt makes have been such a success with DD1 I thought I’d make her a couple more. When the fabric arrived, this one really spoke to me, like really loudly. Yep you’ve guessed it, I’ve nabbed this one for myself and will start my own skirt later on, let’s hope my finishing brain is awake though ๐Ÿ’ค

Happy weekend fellow creatives xxx

Not Been Totally Idle….

Been trying to keep my hand in with the crafts along with another wonderful holiday in Aruba where I finally snorkelled much to HH delight!

DD’s took me to Jackie the Musical, a 70’s themed evening of heart warming nostalgia based around th hugely popular Jackie magazine which was read by pretty much every young teen in the UK back in the 70’s. The music was a full ling a long of Hot Chocolate, Donny Osmond, Marc Bolan, David Cassidy to name a few. Of course we went in appropriate dress, both gypsy skirts knocked up by my own fair hand. A bottle of fizz between 2 of us guaranteed much more confident singing ๐Ÿ˜‚

As you can se I tried to clean Aruba out of its shells…… Not a chance the beaches are FULL of them so I brought a bundle back for crafting and whilst chatting to my darling Dellis last week I started to string the citrine and shells as a trial. I have to say as a first attempt, made up in my head mobile I’m pretty darn pleased.

So that’s what I’ve been upto in a nut SHELL ๐Ÿค—

Goose Feathers & Fans!

Its been an absolute age I know!

Please bear with me, I promise to get to the point but a minor purge first…. Past 3 months have been some of the most testing in a while (I know many are having very trying times so I’m not saying I’m special in any way).

HH and I were on our fantastico holiday in Aruba and can safely say the best so far, new area in new to us apartments and it was a total dream until the last day. ย DD2 contacted us before we saw on Facebook to let us know her dearest friend and first love had been tragically killed in a car crash at just 22 tender years. I have no doubt you can imagine the devistation this caused our family let alone watching our dear friends go through that thing every parent dreads. Suffice to say that alone was enough to throw us into the doldrums. To add insult to injury my osteoarthritis built up a head of steam attacking my thumbs but in particular my right and I am a right handed … DABNABIT!

Any inckling of creative mojo bit the dust with mind unprepared to reenter ‘normal’ life and thumbs causing such agro that even doing up a button has become a challenge. This is where our NHS really comes into its own…. Thank the Lord for the NHS. I’ve been popped on the waiting list to have a thumb joint replacement ….. Who knew such wonderful things can be done, I am so excited and must now employ some patience as it will take a wee while to get it done . Nevertheless something to really look forward to ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Despite the pain in my hands I bit the bullet yesterday and started a bit of crochet after reading an article on the importance of keeping your hobby alive. It resonated very loudly with me as I really could feel my emotional well being suffering along with many of the other ‘side effects’ of letting your hobby slip away.

So what I hear you cry has this to do with goose feathers and fans???

Those of you in the UK know that winter has failed to arrive thus far. Biblical rains devastating the North of our beautiful Isle but not one solitary frost here in the middle of Blighty. ย No need for coats, gloves and scarves so late in December, it’s crazy mad!

That said HH and I needed a new duvet and having seen a goose and down on a very special offer I went ahead and bought it. Neither of us have had feather since childhood and we had certainly forgotten how damn hot they are๐Ÿ˜ณ PHEW! Which of course if winter had arrived would all be hunky dorey BUT being menopausal mauve as well night time has become tropical to say the least. I dug the summer fan out, set it up and felt very pleased with myself thinking a good night awaited me.

WRONG … it rattled and knocked to the point I seriously thought HH was going to do extreme and irreversible damage to it and anything in the near vicinity . So to avoid potential violence to an inanimate object I’ve just had a jolly good root through my drawers (wooden sliding storage type) on the hunt for the screw on doobrie firkin that I knew would tighten the flappy blades up. During said root and rummage I came across the utterly wonderful pattern the gorgeous, wonderful and splendiferous Dellis sent to me in the summer for my 50th.

This immediately triggered the memory of dragging HH down to Walthamstow very soon after getting it, to buy fabric. A first in life for me is that I have laid my hands on the fabric without the usual hiss fit of emptying every cupboard in sight. ITS A SIGN!

So I am cutting the paper pattern tonight, pinning and cutting fabric tomorrow (bank holiday here) and sewing at the end of the week. I think if I pace myself the thumbs should hold up ๐Ÿ˜€. The fabric is a very heavy jersey knit as I had it in my mind that I want this to be a super functional winter item. Not a coat, not a cardi, not a fleece but a bit of everything so I’m thinking I shall call it a CODIF ๐Ÿ˜Ž.

Along with my pictures I’ve also attached a couple of shots of DD1 Christmas offerings, a dream catcher made with some of my precious button stash and a Tree of Life. Both made with her own fair hands.

Oh and yes the fan is now fixed, smooth as silk so I await a perfect nights sleep.

Sending you all love and hugs over the Christmas season but an especially big squeeze to you Dellis. ย It’s as though I could hear your voice as I spotted the pattern and a little spark of mojo popped back in ๐Ÿ˜

Quiet Weekend NOT!

So master plan was to garden and sew ….

I must at this point say despite having DD2 best friend blue lighted to hospital this morning following a sleep over…… Suspected gall stones poor darling I did actually mow the lawn, water the beds, do a bit of weeding AND created one garment for holiday ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Miraculous really and still not entirely sure how I managed it other than maybe the rush of nervous adrenalin. So for your perusal … FORGIVE PLEASE ITS NOT IRONED …… one shot of the rediscovered Indian fabric ready for beach time lounging ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Stash and Beyond …..

I LOVE it when I come across fabric I so totally forgot I had. This was stashed in a bag in the shed of all places!!! I bought this donkeys years ago at a lovely little Indian fabric shop in Wolverton near Milton Keynes back when my sewing mojo was big time AWOL!

Given it a gentle wash and will whip something very simple up especially for my next Aruba trip which is coming up very fast now HOORAAAAAY๐Ÿ˜Ž.

Providing my simple make proves to be simple more pictures will follow.

Oh and I know you will forgive the randomness of these pics … It reflects the random nature of my thoughts ๐Ÿ˜‹

A perfect pompom dahlia and my lovely girls … All things that make me smile LOTS!

Happy weekend y’all xxxx

It’s My WordPress Birthday !

As evidence that I am still sewing the picture show another finished kimono for DD1 bestie, another 3 sitting all cut out ready for a whizz through the machine tomorrow YEE HA I have a day off of work.

The cutie dress was a great little make for my great Neice, it whipped up in under and hour. The cotton viscose is so soft and breathable for the warm weather and I finished it off on the bottom with some of my vintage lace ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Can hardly believe it’s 2 years since I started my blog. It’s seen me through some challenges and although I don’t pop much up now a days I do keep an eye on all you fantabulous bloggers. As ever you all never fail to grab my attention with your creativity.

Oh the random, odd one out picture is of DD2 giving a Salsa demo at a recent community inclusion event ….. I was a tad proud as you can imagine.

Making a mental note right now and committing it here to making time in this now very busy and interesting life of mine to blog. It’s good for the soul to connect with like minded gawjus people. AND how lucky am I to have landed work with an employer who embraces my creativity …. Rather than misunderstood and called madness by the less worldy.

Happy blogging dearest readers. Xxx

Paradigm Learning At Work Week ….

It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it ๐Ÿ˜

My wonderful employer who I’ve been with for nearly 3 months now and truly have never been happier are a pretty forward thinking innovative organisation. Whilst being very focused on excellent customer service delivery they also put their colleague experience right up there. Revolutionary huh!? Happy workforce equals low staff turnover, lower sickness and folk who will happily go the extra mile.

This is why I was more than happy to share my love of sewing during LAW week. The idea being for us to share ‘stuff’ we know and do with our colleagues in short workshops. One colleague shared her vast experience in floristry with some colleagues making some fantastic floral displays. Another used their experience to share skills in self marketing, how to become an excellent communicator, mentor, advocate and such likes. I know this too was a cracking success as an immediate colleague attended and the following day she was actively employing her new skills and genuinely loving how positively is impacted her that day.

Me…. Well dear reader you know me well enough…. The creative in me has a leaning toward near madness sometimes, but as a creative yourself you will understand this all too well..

How to enthuse 2 lovely ladies so they want to go home and sew????

I threw myself in with some of my vast fabric stash and the idea that a kaftan for the beach (my up and coming Carribean adventure) was a plan. Having made plenty before it was a good plan BUT what I really should have done is check the width of the fabric I was using….. I didn’t and had to deal with the potential for disaster with an audience. What do they say, fail to prepare, prepare to fail ….. Ha! But I a the Queen of bringing it back from the brink of disaster!

So armed with my enormously wide chiffon from Walthamstow, sewing machine, one hour and 2 gorgeous ladies I set about proving that you can just throw yourself at a sewing project, no pattern, little in the way of a plan and still get a result.

No iron to make my seams look lovely (time was tight …. Did I say that already)? Cut, pin, hem raw edges and throw a very nervous Charlotte at the fabric with scissors …… Just cut a gentle curve from here to here I said …… Hesitation and BINGO by Jove I think she’s got it, the one bit of shaping required was done perfectly ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Whizzed it through the machine and as I was turning through to put on I had that thought that flashes through your brain …. I hadn’t brought a belt with me to tie the kaftan …. So first imagines I look remarkably like a deflated parachute, then my tape measure caught my eye PERFECT, a belt. As you can see I demonstrated with a belt of sorts. TBH had I chosed a less wide fabric and a non sloppy fabric I know for certain the result would have been awesome BUT I know Charlotte and Faye enjoyed the hour and it gave them a taster.

To get them hands on I had bought 4 tea towels from Sue Ryder for ยฃ2.29. Gave them 2 each and using the kaftan principal had them sew the towels….. Hey presto beach doobrie for little ones. Perfect for toddlers straight out of the ocean, get them warm and dry, cozzie off without public display of bottoms and they can cuddle up in it until dry personally I think they turned out brilliantly.

So all on all a wonderful hour sharing my love albeit in a CURAZEE sort of way.

Huge thanks to my lovely ladies for being so welcoming and appreciative, get sewing…. Anything, even if only a couple of time a year, you get to say I made that!

Pinky Promise …..

I have squeezed some sewing in.

It’s silly o’clock right now rather than stupid o’clock. What’s the difference . Well Stupid o’clock is when I really should be asleep, Silly o’clock is early, should be getting ready for work but REALLY wanting to go back to bed ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m popping up a few pics proof of recent sewing activity …. Bank Holiday this weekend and this is the weekend I should be getting the garden going but the forecast is a rotter, near sub Arctic temps!!!! Well maybe I exaggerate a bit but blooming cold considering it is May now!

Upside to this is I can sew. Not sure what yet. I do like my tunicesque tops for work. Comfy, smart casual and hide a multitude of sins so this is a distinct possibility. This said dear reader you know us creatives, change of direction and temperature in our creative moods happens in a heartbeat, a bit like the British weather. X

It’s Been Hit ‘n’ Miss …..

But I have managed to do some creating whilst finding my groove with the new job.

Have found making time a bit challenging what with all the learning I am doing at work I find myself pretty darn tired by the time I get home. It is getting a bit easier.๐Ÿ˜ด

Made a promise to myself on Bank Holiday Monday to do some sewing and it went well. A kimono, a kaftan and a little summer number for our lovely little new family addition.

The cake is the result of a sweet tooth that couldn’t be satisfied given neither HH nor I were prepared to actually go out to the shops so hey presto quick fix recipe from the good old tinterweb. It genuinely took 1 hour beginning to end ๐Ÿ˜

I have another 2 kimonos cut out awaiting the machine, hopefully tomorrow. Having daughters and lots of nieces is a wonderful thing BUT I really want to make something for myself very soon ……
