It’s My WordPress Birthday !

As evidence that I am still sewing the picture show another finished kimono for DD1 bestie, another 3 sitting all cut out ready for a whizz through the machine tomorrow YEE HA I have a day off of work.

The cutie dress was a great little make for my great Neice, it whipped up in under and hour. The cotton viscose is so soft and breathable for the warm weather and I finished it off on the bottom with some of my vintage lace 😃

Can hardly believe it’s 2 years since I started my blog. It’s seen me through some challenges and although I don’t pop much up now a days I do keep an eye on all you fantabulous bloggers. As ever you all never fail to grab my attention with your creativity.

Oh the random, odd one out picture is of DD2 giving a Salsa demo at a recent community inclusion event ….. I was a tad proud as you can imagine.

Making a mental note right now and committing it here to making time in this now very busy and interesting life of mine to blog. It’s good for the soul to connect with like minded gawjus people. AND how lucky am I to have landed work with an employer who embraces my creativity …. Rather than misunderstood and called madness by the less worldy.

Happy blogging dearest readers. Xxx

Father Forgive Me For I Have Sinned ….

… And keep on sinning! Bad Gal 😦

Here dearest reader I lay before you my confession for the day, the week,  ok the year!

In the workplace I am a highly disciplined person. To do lists that are tackled by priority, meet targets and deadlines as NT would I believe attest to. So how come in my home life does chaos rein?

Could it be the Gemini in me? That old two-sided personality … Or maybe the only child syndrome?

The attention span of a gnat quite frankly. Well in truth if things are going well I see it through to the bitter end BUT I can be given to tantrum if things go against me. Not the stamping, hissing type of a teen but the obstinate, petulant sort of a toddler!

Case in point … Hidden in the airing cupboard is a real kimono that I know Del will remember as she offered words of wisdom when I hit my wall.  I miss calculated on the belt, as a result just couldn’t turn it through (fabric isvery very old and quite delicate). Rather than be a grown up and listen to my buddy by Re cutting a wider version I hid it! There it has sat for a year … OMG a year!  It’s so close to finished but oh no Mrs cut off her nose to spite her face, there it still sits.

Fragile package by the cupboard in which NOBODY is allowed to go is a couple of cork boards to decorate as Del did.  So loved the effect I thought YEP I’m going to do a couple of them for DD2 for her photos BUT because I couldn’t find my staple gun, there they sit wrapped …. This one in my defence is just a couple of weeks old.

On the wardrobe door is the DD1 blanket which is a work in progress, as is the one hour kimono whose neckline is driving me berserk.  Theres the tantrum talk again 🙂 All I need to is bind the neck and front edge. Sewing machine is set up, have lovely satin bias from Walthamstow BUT it annoyed me so can’t bring myself to touch it.  What’s that all about LOSER!

How shameful is it that I have stash taking up valuable space in DD2 bedroom? Big bottom drawer MINE, top of wardrobe MINE ….. Drawer is Walthamstow, wardrobe is the carefully collected vintage fabrics. Not sure what caused that particular fit of sulks…. Think my brain finds it too painful to deal with so has erased the memory 😉

Attention span so pathetic I even meandered off from the actual pics you need as evidence and took pics of bling and stuff just because they please me.  Whilst I say I like order and method me thinks I am also a serial liar (to myself) if I spot a bit of blingage or a doobrie that makes me smile I have to fill a space and believe me, space is limited in my little piece of England.  Praise the Lord I married a man who accepts my foibles else I would have been a divorcee time ago!

The crochet heart thing started last night. DD2 has a much-loved cardigan that she just won’t bin so I started some granny square mid DD1 blanket action …. They are cool but then I thought what else could I do so You Tube got it.  There I found my desire, very quick but super effective crochet hearts. 7 in half an hour and more have followed this morning. Started stitching to the dying cardigan and at this point am very happy with the result, just a few more to do. Then it popped into my head, ENT kimono, sitting cut out in my living room. Now I love this lady like a sister so should be highly motivated to get it done so why the failure …… It’s Georgette like the kimono of failed neckline!

I lay before you my confession to being a serial starter and non finisher IF things don’t go my way.

Have fingers and toes crossed that I don’t stand alone in this affliction? I seek your absolution dear reader. Am I forgiven?

Happy Sunday x

Don’t worry if you don’t…. think I am still a bit silly in the head following the ‘flu’ from hell!

SPITALFIELDS did go ahead last week despite the dreaded lurgie and it was a fantastic day. The hours flew by, so many interesting people to chat to. As a launch pad for our Ultimate Vintage Upcycle business, now on facebook…. it really was a great place.

The market was teeming with tourists who simply loved what we are doing with the sourcing genuine vintage fabrics and then upcycling them into cushions, tote bags, bunting, ornaments and the likes. Many business cards were taken and we even gathered some VERY useful emails. All very exciting. We even made some sales to boot!

We now know that the Sunday market would have better suited our stall as it has a very large foot fall of Londoners who are out to shop rather than peruse. Not that I am grumbling, the whole day was fun and we learned so much and we feel even more able to move our little venture forward. This would have started on 4th November had I not been totally struck down but as we so often say, everything happens for a reason. My reason was a definate need to draw breath and re-focus, which I have done and now with renewed vigour am prepping for next week and a big push.

I do hope you will swing by my facebook page to see what I have for sale. I would be especially grateful if you could point your friends and colleagues to the site as well…. the more the merrier!

Shipping will be international, I don’t intend to limit myself to these shores.

The pictures of the day, well we hope you like them. In for a penny, in for a pound we decided to go the whole hog and dress in a vintage inspired way. Think you will agree that DD1 victory roll is AWESOME!

Please do share the new facebook page with your friends….. the more the merrier 😉

Super Duper Quickie…..

…. have just set up my ‘business’ facebook page Ultimate Vintage Upcycle.

Until I have a real, honest to God website I’m starting here. Not convinced I have set it up right BUT it’s a start nevertheless!

From small acorns grow great oaks (we hope)

Welcome ANY tips on setting up a fledgling business to sell via the world wide web 😉

Thanks x

Army Stands Guard …

.. For me, my growing army brings feelings of great satisfaction.

Not only do they guard my precious textiles but everytime I walk into what was our daughters bedroom ( was, as in she went off on a hoolie to the caribbean to stay with my darling friend at Coral Reef Beach, Aruba) I smile at those stylish old stylie guys.  Once a pair of barkcloth curtains they are bit by bit growing into my very own army!

As much as I love them they will have to be sold, for some reason the bank manager is very insistent on the mortgage being paid which is a dreadful bore!

You can see the bedroom rather resembles a girl cave, full of my favourite things and I am happy to report my much needed stock for Judy’s Vintage Fair in Spitalfields on 2nd November is beginning to shape up. Eldest daughter has also been hard at it so her little cottage is brimming too. Come the day we will have plenty of fare for the fair!

Keep your fingers crossed for us please, our tiny fledgling business may, with a kind wind behind us and an appreciative audience with money in their wallets could launch us in the direction we have dreamed of for so very long now.

As my faithful and kind readers I feel it only right that I whisper to you, and only you the new name we have decided upon, so sssssshush for now, just between me and thee:

ULTIMATE VINTAGE CYCLING by sewinloveuk

Next a proper, grown up website to sell our beauties. Feeling both excited and pretty darn scared, a healthy mix I am told.

Have a super weekend lovely people and hope your weather forecast is better than ours….. Rain, rain and more rain.  (Yep, the Brits really do always talk about the weather) x

Pinny Power …. Not Just For The More Mature (anymore)

THE pocket, all essential to nanna's the world over.... It's where that crumpled note of money live's until she can sneak it into your hand while she says SUSH! How fab are nannna's and grandads!?

Nice firm fabric that can be yanked about without fear of it ripping.

Nice firm fabric that can be yanked about without fear of it ripping.

In a bid for yet another quick make for my vintage fair debut in November, I cut out a very simple Pinny that as you already know dear reader is made from genuine vintage fabric. I found some gorgeous bright and vivid green velvet ribbon that was amongst my poptatic finds that had come all the way from Malta.

I have very deliberately made this pinny for a more curvy lady as we do rather get over looked. There is an assumption we want to wear saggy and shapeless clothes, which if you are curvy or have a curvy woman know is total tosh!

Therefore the waist tie is deeper and has a nice firm interfacing to hold its shape, the only change I would make is the length, it’s a bit too long for my liking. That said because it is a colour fast, heavy weight cotton is super practical for real use, not just looking pretty.

Next job today is to make a pattern for a kimono and I look forward to sharing it with you here.

Thanks for taking the time to red and my wish is you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend my dear reader. X

Vintage Fabric Take Over …

Dear Reader,

You have followed my obssessive journey the past few days with the OCD like collecting of vintage fabrics and I felt as a form of confession and in turn personal spiritual freedom from the weight of my purchases, I should picture them here.

That get it out of your head and into the real world thing that is said to be cathartic …. so here goes.

Just a minor draw back however, I’m holding out on you, there is more in the post (eeeek), should arrive early next week.

BUT in justification of the over-buying, some of the fabrics due to arrive are from France, are very rare AND I didn’t technically buy them. Uh Ha! Gorgeous Husband found them and sought the nod from me, then purchased. So I didn’t really buy those one’s did I?

Promise to self, cross my heart and hope to die have no internet for a few days if I don’t chain myself to my sewing machine and actually create!!! HONESTLY 🙂

Willen Will Break The Bank!

Took a run over to Willen Hospice charity shop today to return the curtains. As suspected, not only did I spend the refund but a further £9.00 on top!

As complete confirmation of my obsession, a knitting pattern I DON’T KNIT! Well it was so lovely.

A little black and gold ensemble from I’m guessing the 1960’s for was it £15 or £20. Either way a steal for such a wonderful thing, sadly not in my size, so that has been left at the shop for another lucky person to buy. My black, silver and gold will keep me happy.

Spot a book there Del? Yep a book …. Nice pictures 🙂

For some reason I have been a bit embarrassed to ever mention that I am hindered by Agoraphobia but today I really saw the funny side of this mainly annoying condition. I think mine needs renaming ….. Selective agoraphobia. Funny how I can get out for fabric and vintage aye? Gosh when my man comes home I think he will be wishing my condition weren’t so selective as any jaunt out may be quite short but boy can I spend even in the most restrictive of time frames!!!

Saved by the DELL !!

Following a spectacular morning with my lovely Rachel yesterday morning I was feeling a little worn around the edges so saved my blog for today.

I had a tip off that a local charity shop for Willen Hospice have some lovely vintage pieces so along we went. The tip was good…. YEEEEHA!

I think Rachel may have near lost the will to live but was a darn good sport about it, so I felt it only right and proper to take her back to mine, fill her full of Latte and talk sewing! How good of me, she doesn’t sew! In my mind I was doing a public service. By listening to me droan on she was able to zone out and enjoy some well earned alpha brain wave time, maybe it was that state of relaxation that made her fall asleep 😉

Why saved by the DELL ?

Amongst my purchases were some really funky 50’s designs. Only when I had a good look last night did I see the label Fibreglass!!! REALLY! Of course, like every other needlecraft move I make, I reported this detail to Del. I woke this morning to a mail concerned about what may happen if I cut this fabric…. small fibres and potential to get into airways. Immediately jumped on the internet whilst giving myself a very firm kick up the rear for not engaging my brain sooner (thankfully hadn’t cut into it).

Newly gained knowledge is that this product was considered a wonder product in the late 50’s. Non Crease, retains whiteness, fire retardant to name a few BUT we now know that it can cause dermatitis if handled too much.

A quick phone call to Willen and they were horrified to hear this could present a hazzard to health. A full refund has been approved …. I shall still spend it in the shop. Willen is such a valued resource in our community I couldn’t take the money and run. They have been totally honourable and they, like I have learnt something new. So really we were both saved by the DELL! x

Poppies

Poppies

Just 2 short hours later the poppy cushions have multiplied. We now have a family!

Do I sell them as a set or individually?

As you know dear reader, they are TOTALLY unique as the fabric was a barkcloth 1950’s curtain that I have upcycled ….. No chance of walking into a friends house and seeing the same cushions 🙂
